Energy Savings Project
We just completed the installation of 3,800 new fluorescent bulbs which reduced power consumption facility wide by 16 Kw per hour or 115,000 KWh per year. This is the equivalent of powering 15 average homes for an entire year. Nordson EDI also installed 85 load correction devices at specific motors throughout the facility to increase the efficiency of the motors, especially under light duty loads. These devices will result in an additional savings of approximately 170,000 Kwh's per year. Overall the project is projected to save 11percent on our electrical consumption or 285,000 Kwh's over the course of an average year. This combined total is the equivalent of removing about 40 cars from the road per year.
Hydraulic Oil Usage
Nordson EDI has instituted the use of premium hydraulic oil for its machine tools that has a five year life versus a two year life. This project reduced our hydraulic oil consumption by 1,500 gallons per year.
Paper Reduction
Nordson EDI has made a concentrated effort to reduce paper consumption. In the QC department a large computer monitor was purchased that allowed the drawings that were hard copies to be eliminated and viewed on screen. This resulted in approximately 90,000 square feet of plotter paper from being generated per year. The power consumption of the plotter, its ink and toner were also reduced by roughly 15 percent. Nordson EDI also decided to publish its weekly production schedule using two sided copying. When the copying format was changed the number of copies was reduced from 25 to 15 people who actually needed the information. A whooping 89,000 sheets of paper were removed from circulation per year.

Metal Scrap Program
Instituted 2008, the program collects and segregates all metal scrap in the building. Previous Nordson EDI was not collecting small stainless steel scraps, nuts and bolts, brass turnings, and copper wire. In 2008 approximately 6,000 pounds of material avoided the landfill and was put back into service via recycling. Not only was waste reduced, but the need to produce 6,000 pounds of virgin material was eliminated. Nordson EDI was already recycling 450,000 pounds of alloy tool steel chips.
Grinding Wheel Recycling
Until 2008, Nordson EDI disposed of its used grinding wheels in the landfill. A source was located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan that crushes the wheels and reclaims the abrasive material for use in making new products. Approximately 12,000 pounds of waste a year is now saved from landfills.
Wood Products Recycling
Using a local resource Nordson EDI disposes of used and damaged lumber that is chipped and sold to make landscaping mulch, wood pellet fuels and pressed board material. Elimination of Bottled Water Nordson EDI completed the installation of direct from tap filtered water coolers. This action eliminated the approximately 750 pounds of land fill mass.
