UltraSplit On-Line Die Separation Device
The UltraSplit™ device frames the die as it operates on-line, splits the die halves, and orients the die bodies to provide access for operators to clean the flow surfaces. The device consists of a support system with brackets on which the lower die body is suspended; and perpendicular horizontal frameworks on both sides of the support system that incorporate manual or motorized drive shafts for moving the upper die body back and forth. The mounting assemblies on the drive shafts can include optional trunnions that permit the upper body to be pivoted. To operate the system, the worker first removes the body bolts, then uses a switch to start the motor to separate the die bodies or a hand crank to separate them manually. Hand-operated levers applied to the trunnions easily pivot the upper body to provide access for cleaning.
This easy-to-operate system eliminates hours of downtime required to disconnect the die, move it to and from a cleaning station, then heat it up again to resume production. In addition, it avoids safety and damage concerns associated with moving around something as heavy as an extrusion die.
